LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE

London Stock Exchange
  • London Stock Exchange plc (the "LSE") is central to maintaining London as one of the leading international financial centres. The LSE's shares were themselves listed on the London Stock Exchange in July 2001. As on 30 October 2014, there were nearly 1,900 companies traded on the LSE's market for listed securities (the "Main Market") and nearly 1,130 listed on the AIM market - a second market designed for those smaller or growing companies which may not satisfy all the requirements for admission to the Main Market.
  • Of the companies traded on the Main Market, around 600 were international, drawn from nearly 60 countries including Canada, Poland, Egypt and India. As these figures indicate, being on the Main Market gives the individual company, large or small, access to a large pool of capital with a global dimension and provides a market on which its shares can be widely traded.
  • This allows a company to raise capital to develop its business and, for the company's original investors, it provides an opportunity to spread or dilute their risk. Obtaining access to this pool of capital by listing on the Main Market can also significantly raise the profile and prestige of a company, both nationally and internationally.
